I love creating.

I’m a writer, I play bass in a band and I sometimes indulge in a little photography, pottery and gardening. I believe that everyone is creative. We were all born to create but sadly, somewhere along the way, many of us forget how to enjoy being creative.

I’m lucky. I rediscovered the joy of creativity in my thirties and have enjoyed it ever since. I’ve written two novels, numerous short stories and poems and I’ve had work published. I even formed an all girl folk-punk band in my forties. (It’s never too late!)

Some days it’s easy, other days it’s not, but I’ve learned a lot about creativity over the last fifteen years and I continue to learn. A little secret: a sense of curiosity and thirst for new experiences is central to being creative. (But more on that later in the blog.)

Over the last few years, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to share my enthusiasm and passion for creativity with others through workshops and writing groups that I have hosted and I thought it was time to widen the net (literally) as none of us can create alone. We can all learn from each other.

That’s why ‘A Year of Living Creatively’ was born.

Each week I will post a tool, technique or exercise with the intention of enhancing my creativity. I will also post my reactions to it, my thoughts and feelings on the week. The exercises will be drawn from the practises of other creative people, science and psychology, philosophy, as well as ancient (and not so ancient) western and eastern traditions. Above all, I hope this blog inspires you, entertains you, makes you laugh and equally (I hope) makes you think.

Don’t be shy. Drop me a comment. Let me know what works for you. Let me know what makes you more creative.

The intention is to expand the blog eventually and produce it as a book with further exercises in.

Happy Creating!
